Ugly Betty Canceled: Jackson Heights loses mainstream representation
On January 28th, it was announced that Ugly Betty was canceled, and thus the fourth season would be the last. I think I heard Vanessa Williams screaming from Manhattan. In April the series finale will air. As a hardened Ugly Betty fan, I am sad that I will have less to watch on Hulu the next day. As a Queens resident, I am even more sad that Roosevelt Avenue will lose its most mainstream outlet. A lot of shows take place in NYC, but not a lot venture out to Queens. Although the majority of the show took place in Manhattan, great scenes of the neighborhood were featured almost weekly after the show moved to NYC. Although shows always glamorize certain aspects, and JH isn't exactly the Upper West Side, it emphasized the neighborhood feel.
As a newbie to Queens, I have thought about moving to the heights seeking cheaper rent and the E Express train. Thanks to Ugly Betty for exposing me! Ugly Betty, you will be missed.
Young Queens girl gets hauled off
Did you read about this? A young girl (twelve!) from Forest Hills was taken to JAIL for doodling on a desk. It seems school has changed a lot since I was there. I understand this is a city school, but I think that teachers need to assess what is worthy of calling the police and making a scene.
Maybe teachers are getting fed up with childrens' shit? Well, then you're not fit to be a teacher. Apparently, it has happened before as well. Why hasn't someone questioned these educators before? I understand, there is always two sides to every story. I'm sure this girl pulled some sort of hissy fit, probably called the teacher bad words, and even threw something. Either way, the girl is twelve, and deserves harsh discipline from the school, NOT LAW ENFORCERS. Do your job, teachers.
Thanks to NY Daily News for writing this.

An Appeal to the Queens residents!
This is a new blog, and as such, needs new material. If you live in Queens and want to share something cool about it, let us know!
Day trip to the Ugly Betty house
A fun day trip in Queens (probably for a Queen) is to take the 7 train out to 90th Street and visit the house from the awesomely forgotten show 'Ugly Betty.' The house is at 92nd and Elmhurst Ave., right near the heart of Jackson Heights, where the show actually takes place.
I'm surprised that we didn't see more people in front of it, it was just a normal house that someone (probably? definitely) lives in, and no doubt hates people like us. No sign of Vanessa Williams, but the song "colors of the wind" definitely blew through the trees that day.
It also gave us a chance to explore Jackson Heights, a place that has definitely become increasingly gentrified over the years. I'm thinking of even putting down roots in this neighborhood, that E express train is very tempting!
Queens v. Brooklyn
Brooklyn is over-hyped by far. Here is a short list of what there is to hate about it, feel free to add yours:
1.) Brooklyn is far from everything except Wall Street, and no one actually works there or hangs out there
2.) People from Brooklyn who think it's awesome, when really they live in Flatbush and it takes them 1.5 hours to get to work in Midtown
3.) Williamsburg
4.) Because all your friends live there, and you're sick of even TRYING to see if the G is running today. Don't check, because it's not.
5.) The Starbucks to person ratio is too low.
6.) I pay $700/month to live on Broadway above a bagel shop and you spend $750 to live in "Prospect Heights Adjacent" aka Crown Heights. Seriously?
7.) I don't care if SJP lives there.
8.) When's the last time the F train came? And when's the last time the N came? Right. What even is the JMZ?
