Ugly Betty Canceled: Jackson Heights loses mainstream representation
On January 28th, it was announced that Ugly Betty was canceled, and thus the fourth season would be the last. I think I heard Vanessa Williams screaming from Manhattan. In April the series finale will air. As a hardened Ugly Betty fan, I am sad that I will have less to watch on Hulu the next day. As a Queens resident, I am even more sad that Roosevelt Avenue will lose its most mainstream outlet. A lot of shows take place in NYC, but not a lot venture out to Queens. Although the majority of the show took place in Manhattan, great scenes of the neighborhood were featured almost weekly after the show moved to NYC. Although shows always glamorize certain aspects, and JH isn't exactly the Upper West Side, it emphasized the neighborhood feel.
As a newbie to Queens, I have thought about moving to the heights seeking cheaper rent and the E Express train. Thanks to Ugly Betty for exposing me! Ugly Betty, you will be missed.

Hi queensinqueens,
ReplyDeleteI stumbled on your blog by accident. Being a big Ugly Betty fan and all too, I read one of your posts talking about the actual JH house used in the show? So just wondering, did you ever move to Jackson Heights, and if so how is it like? You mentioned that way back when that it was in the early stages of gentrification. I guess I just wanted to know if the 'neighborhood' looks entirely now to the one presented on the show.
Thanks for your blog by the way.
From Australia,
Stephanie
